Las Vegas ranks No. 3 for summer travel destinations

A list of top summer travel destinations has Las Vegas ranked third among the 50 most popular U.S. cities, trailing only Los Angeles and San Diego.

The list, published by online travel giant Travelocity, used attractions, weather and affordability as the three main criteria for rating cities on a scale of 1 to 10.

Las Vegas notched scores of 4.5 for attractions, as survey participants preferred beaches, amusement parks, national parks and historical landmarks over casinos, the report said.

The valley scored an 8 on weather, taking a small hit for its dry desert climate. Los Angeles and San Diego got weather scores of 10.

The report gave Las Vegas the list’s highest mark in affordability, with a score of 8, citing its hotel prices.

“Really, the only thing Vegas lacks is beaches,” Travelocity spokesman Keith Nowak said. “Just about everything else did pretty well. It did well for a young city in terms of historical landmarks; it has national parks nearby, and individual attractions were also factored into the amusement park category.”
